Lane County Fire District #1
needs
You
are invited to become a volunteer firefighter and/or
emergency medical responder. We
are “Neighbors Volunteering to Help Neighbors.” Lane
County Fire District #1 needs volunteers . . . Lane County fire District #1 covers over 200 square miles and includes the communities of Crow, Elmira, Noti, Veneta and Walton. Major roads within the fire district include Butler, Central, Gimpl Hill, Highway 126, Lawrence, Lorane Highway, Spencer Creek, Territorial, Vaughn and Wolf Creek. We serve nearly 7000 residential and business addresses with a total population approaching 15,000. Yearly we respond to well over 1,000 emergency calls. Your fire district provides a wide range of fire suppression, public education, fire prevention, and emergency medical/rescue services. There are eleven neighborhood fire stations within the district. All of them are dependent upon neighbors volunteering time to come to the aid of people within our community. Our slogan and mission: "Neighbors Volunteering to Help Neighbors" is only made possible through community-wide volunteer support. LCFD #1 has a significant need for more volunteers, particularly at stations outside the City of Veneta. Currently many of the neighborhood stations have only two or three volunteers and a few have none. Why volunteer? Beyond the critical need for more personnel, there are many reasons why you should consider volunteering with LCFD #1. We offer excellent training that is recognized state wide for its quality. You will gain the satisfaction of helping others and providing an essential service to our community. You will meet new and interesting people from a wide variety of backgrounds, ages, occupations and interests. You will have a broad support group and share a unique camaraderie. You will experience exciting action and be given opportunities to enrich your education. For some, volunteering can become a pathway to a career in the fire and/or emergency medical services. What are the requirements to become a volunteer? LCFD #1 requires you to be at least 16 years of age and possess a valid Oregon driver's license. You will need to take a five-weekend "Recruit Academy," which covers all aspects of entry-level firefighter qualifications. Completing this training is compulsory and will allow you to respond to emergencies and advance into other training disciplines. After successful completion of the Recruit Academy you will be on a six-month period of probation. During this time, you will be assigned a mentor and you will be expected to meet minimum standards related to knowledge and skills. Other opportunities for training include EMT (Emergency Medical Technician), Apparatus Driver/ Operator, Officer and Resident Volunteer (an opportunity for selected individuals to live at and respond to calls from the main Veneta station). I'd like to volunteer, but I'm just too busy. Everyone who volunteers with LCFD #1 leads a very busy life. Each member volunteers as much time as they can balance with their other commitments. We are hopeful you can do the same. The payoff is in both providing a vital service to the community and in enormous personal satisfaction. How do I apply to become a LCFD #1 volunteer? Call our main station in Veneta (935-2226) and request an application, or stop by in person. We are located at 88050 Territorial Road, ½ mile south of the Highway 126 and Territorial Road intersection. What are my commitments if I become a volunteer? Complete the LCFD #1 Recruit Academy · Attend weekly drills at least 75% of the time (Monday 7-9 PM or Wed. 9:30-11:30 AM) · Attend periodic weekend training sessions (usually two to four per year) · Respond to calls when available If I have additional questions, can I talk to a current volunteer? Call our main station at 935-2226 and request that a volunteer contact you. We will do our best to put you in touch with someone from your response area. |
